One of the things that makes CrossFit Lake Wylie such a great community is the members. We truly feel like we have a phenomenal group of people that are committed to not only improving themselves, but helping each other improve.
To help everyone get to know our great members, we’ll be highlighting a new member each month. The reasons we select a particular member may vary from month to month, but each member we highlight is someone we’re proud to have as a part of our Lake Wylie CrossFit community.
This month’s member of the month is Jeff Babb, a 47 year old Anesthesiologist working at Caromont Hospital in Gastonia. He’s been married for 23 years and has 3 daughters, ages 19, 16 and 14. He grew up in Brevard, NC and now lives in Clover.
We asked Jeff a few questions to help us get to know him better and these are his responses:
What Do You Enjoy Doing When You’re Not Doing CrossFit?
I like to travel, read, and watch brain rotting TV. And occasionally do home improvement projects.
How Long Have You Been Doing CrossFit?
On and off on my own for several years, but formally in class (at CFLKW) for 8 months.
What Do You Hope To Accomplish Through CrossFit?
I want to avoid for as long as possible the long, steady, age related slide toward being weak and slow. Before CrossFit I did a lot of endurance oriented training, and found that I kept getting weaker and slower with each passing year. I finally figured out that low intensity, large volume training was not moving me toward my goals. Since starting CrossFit I have seen a huge improvement. I am getting stronger each month and my times are getting better.
What’s Your Favorite CrossFit Workout?
I’m still pretty weak on a lot of the weightlifting moves, so I really like the WODs with more bodyweight elements.
What Do You Like Most About CrossFit?
I’ve tried doing CrossFit on my own many times over the years, but have never been able to keep it up for more than a couple of months at a time. It is too hard mentally to push myself that hard when I am working out alone. But working out at a box is completely different. I love the energy of “competition”; competing against the clock, against myself and against the Wodify leader board! It makes me push harder and get better than I ever could on my own. I also love that it is different every single day. There is no getting in a rut or getting bored. Each night I can’t wait till 8pm to see what the WOD is for the next day. It’s fun.
What Area Would You Most Like To Improve In The Next Few Months?
Overhead Strength. I suck at all the overhead lifts, HSPU, etc.
What Would You Tell Someone That Was Considering Trying CrossFit For The First Time?
Don’t be intimidated. I have a buddy who is a bit out of shape now, but used to be a decent athlete. I have been trying to get him to try CrossFit, but he keeps saying he wants to get in shape first so that he doesn’t embarrass himself when he goes. What I tell him is that CrossFit is the most welcoming, supportive environment that you can ever imagine. There are people of all ages and skill levels, all working out together, cheering one another on. Every workout is scalable to all ability levels, and the coaching is excellent. There is no reason to be afraid!
What Do You Like Most About CrossFit Lake Wylie?:
I like the people who coach there and work out there. It makes it a place where I get a great workout and have a lot of fun along the way. I love the supportive atmosphere, the friendly competition, and of course the cool t-shirts.
What Would You Tell Someone That Was Considering Joining CrossFit Lake Wylie?
I would tell them how much fun it is. I enjoy myself every time I walk in the door, and that is saying a lot since sometimes we might do 100 thrusters or 150 Wall Balls. It’s fun because of the atmosphere created by the coaches and the other athletes working out beside you.
