Our member spotlight this month shines brightly on Courtney Hemphill. Courtney started out in our first New You Challenge group, had a great deal of success and decided to continue her journey with CFLKW once the challenge ended.
We asked Courtney to share her experience so far and this is what she said:
I always heard about crossfit, but thought it was way to advanced for me. Then I saw the 6 week new you challenge on facebook that said anyone could do crossfit, so I signed up.
My first impression was that I was REALLY SCARED. When I walked in and a class was finishing up, and they looked like they were in tip top shape, sweating, doing hand stands & stuff and I almost walked out b/c I knew I couldn’t do any of those things.
Now I know I can’t do them right now and I don’t have to, but I will eventually work my way up to that point. A handstand and climbing the rope is definitely on my to do list now! And I don’t feel intimidated anymore by watching everyone else b/c EVERYONE is so encouraging.
My first brightspot was running 400M non stop. Running is definitely not on my favorite list and I used to have to stop and walk for a little bit to catch my breath, but now I can do it with the rest of the class.
I’m working on improving my running because I want to be able to run like the other people in the classes without having to walk during a WOD. Chestin told me it is just going to take a lot of practice, which I am sure all of the coaches are willing to give me.
My favorite memory so far has been after the 6 week challenge when I came to my 1st Saturday workout and I was scared once again. When I walked in, everyone looked at me and welcomed me with open arms. I really felt like I was part of the CFLKW family.
Congrats Courtney on your progress so far, we’re excited to have you as part of our community and we look forward to watching/helping you continue to improve!
